Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary

Mortal Kombat

John F. Kaiser III & Guy Chapman – Navarro County Gazette

30 Years of Kombat, Fatalities, Friendships, and Victories! Join us as we celebrate the legacy of Mortal Kombat!

Mortal Kombat is not only an iconic series of video games, it has a legacy that involves Corsicana. When Williams Entertainment/Midway Home Entertainment purchased local video game publisher Tradewest to secure a home publishing route for it’s arcade hits, the launch of Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995 took the gaming world by storm and temporarily overloaded local phone lines due to the massive amount of game support calls coming in.

Both owners of the Navarro County Gazette had a role in that era of history. with Chapman being present for the home console launch of Mortal Kombat 3, and Kaiser coming onboard during the Mortal Kombat 4 era. If any of our readers were early internet gamers back then called Midway Corsicana’s support lines for moves, fatalities and secret codes for Mortal Kombat games, you could have very well talked to one of us. It’s a personal honor to have taken an early role in the franchise’s history.

The original Mortal Kombat arcade game debuted on Oct. 8, 1992 dominating the arcade and home console markets. The game has become a long-running gaming franchise with 11 main entries, three side stories, three live-action films, three animated films, a live stage show, and numerous merchandising. Mortal Kombat, along with Digital Pictures and Sega’s Night Trap, prompted the formation of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) in the 1990s, a United States government-backed organization that set content ratings for the video game industry.

To commemorate the anniversary, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Game shared the following celebratory quote:
