From Staff Reports

The sickle cell blood drive, originally scheduled to take place Saturday, Feb. 19, has been cancelled. Rena Witherspoon, the Regional Sickle Cell Account Manager for the American Red Cross, has issued a statement regarding the cancellation and future events.

“Thank you for your partnership as we continue to navigate through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and experience staff shortages, like many industries.

Though staff shortages have affected your blood drive directly, please know your role as a Sickle Cell Blood Program Partner/Leader remains invaluable, as you continue to make an impact on the lives of so many patients and their loved ones.

We are actively working to hire more staff and are doing everything we can to keep blood drives as planned. Balancing blood drives with patient need is a daily effort that requires assessing available resources to make the best choices to protect patient care, our volunteer partners and staff.

There are still ways you can help!

  • Please ask donors to donate at the upcoming Thursday, March 3 blood drive at St. Luke United Methodist Church from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Go to and enter sponsor code Corsicana.

Thank you so much for your continued support of the Red Cross as we work to deliver our mission during this uniquely challenging time.”
