The “Big C” I’m going through is Cancer.
I’m 53 years old without a family history. I found the lump on July 21, mammogram on July 22, biopsy July 29 and diagnosis on July 30. Needless to say, my head was spinning with the rapid speed of my situation. We spent the entire day, Aug. 3 at Baylor Waxahachie meeting with my team of doctors who had formulated my treatment options. I hope to help other women in my situation and those that love them. I have learned that we as a society are poorly informed about breast cancer and current treatment options.
Many people have reached out to me with their experience with breast cancer. I have learned that there are no two breast cancer patients who are alike! And there are many factors to choosing the right treatment options for the individual patient. Thanks to the National Breast Cancer Coalition and breast cancer awareness, the evolution of breast cancer treatment options changes constantly. So, your best bet is to choose a team of doctors you like and trust and make your treatment choices based on their best advice.
I’m a firm believer that the patient should be their own best advocate and make their own choices for treatment based on the best medical advice given to them. So far on my journey, each of the four doctors on my team have given me treatment options but I’m the one who chose.
October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Please look for more columns about my journey over the next month.
