Community college celebrates its local history

By Guy Chapman – Navarro County Gazette

Sept. 16 was a milestone day for Navarro College, with two events taking place: The 75th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon, and the “Bulldogs Unite” affinity celebration, held later in the evening to commemorate Navarro College Day.

Navarro College District President Dr. Kevin G. Fegan welcomed guests to the event, as Board Chairman Phil Judson presented the invocation. After lunch, Chair of Theatre Dr. Shellie O’Neal presented a small student performance celebrating the history of Navarro College.

A short video was presented celebrating the community college’s new allowance of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The first nursing classes are expected to begin with the fall 2023 semester. The college also recognized Senator Brian D. Birdwell, State Representative Cody Harris, and Sixth District Congressman Jake Ellzey for their efforts in making the program happen.

The luncheon concluded with a time capsule planned for the college’s 100th anniversary in 2046, and a proclamation of the 75th anniversary issued by Mayor Don Denbow.

Later in the evening, Navarro College held its inaugural “Bulldogs Unite” event undreneath the Barracks Bunch Clock Tower, honoring students and faculty, past and present, as well as the community that has supported the college. Attendees were gifted a commemorative Bulldog medal.

Highlights of the luncheon and the affinity celebration are featured in the video.
