Medical Director, Fire Rescue create vaccination PSA

Corsicana Fire Rescue posted a video update on their Facebook page featuring Dr. John D. Updegrove, Medical Director of Navarro County. Filmed at the Corsicana-Navarro County Public Health-Department building, Dr. Updegrove urges Navarro County residents who have not gotten their COVID-19 vaccination to do so.
“Although locally COVID cases have declined, the threat still remains as we continue to have active cases throughout our community,” Dr. Updegrove said in the video.
The public service announcement is in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases due to the new “Delta Variant.” Earlier in the week, at least 160 new COVID-19 cases were reported after an outbreak at a Houston-area church youth camp. The confirmed cases included the new variant.
“Early tests have determined those who have been vaccinated are protected from this strain of the virus,” Dr. Updegrove said, adding that the vaccines currently available reduce the risk of getting the virus by about 95 percent.
As of July 9, these are the following statistics for COVID-19 vaccinations in Navarro County:
Number of vaccinated in Navarro County: 33,119
Percentage of Navarro County Population Vaccinated:
Age 12+ – 1 dose vaccinated: 44.28%
Age 12+ – Fully vaccinated: 38.19%
Age 65+ – 1 dose vaccinated: 74.87%
Age 65+ – Fully vaccinated: 66.76%
“As the local health official, I recommend anyone who is eligible to please get the vaccine,” Dr. Updegrove said. “It’s the best thing you can possibly do for your benefit, for the benefit of your friends, your family, your neighbors, the people you socialize with.”
Dr. Updegrove took over the Medical Director position in January after the former director, Dr. Kent Rogers, passed away due to complications from COVID-19.
