If you or your children are experiencing issues logging into your favorite games or services tonight, there is a suspected worldwide DDoS Attack currently underway.
A DDoS, or Disruption of Service Attack, is a cyber-attack in which the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet. (As described on wikipedia)
It seems everything from Netflix and Disney Plus, to Xbox Live and Playstation Network, amongst many other services are experiencing major issues due to the attack.
What does this mean for you, the users of these games and services? There is no need for alarm about your personal information that may be stored. However, you may experience lag or make connection issues. DDoS attacks cannot steal website visitors information. The purpose of a DDoS attack is to overload the services resources. DDoS attacks can be used as a way of extortion and blackmailing where the attackers can ask their target to pay a ransom to stop a DDoS attack.
There are no details on who is orchestrating these potential attacks, or what their end goal may be, at the time of this writing. No word from official sources on the scope of the issues other than the following from Xbox Support: “We are aware that users may not be able to sign-in to Xbox Live at this time. Our teams are currently investigating to fix this issue. We will update here (Twitter) when we have more information to share!”
