Public churches and centers available for locals to stay warm

By Guy Chapman – Navarro County Gazette

As Texas struggles to get its power grid under control, millions of Texans have been without power since the early hours of Monday morning with an estimated 75 percent of Texas power generation capacity impacted.

While ERCOT, the corporation that supplies electric power to more than 25 million Texans, has stated it hopes to restore power to its customers as soon as possible, these outages could potentially last several days. ERCOT had urged customers who still have power to turn off their thermostat and unplug appliances, as too much load on restored circuits at once can cause another outage.

As these widespread outages and record low temperatures continue, some locals have turned to alternative locations to find warmth.

Corsicana currently has these available warming station locations and shelters for residents without power and needing to avoid the elements:

  • First Baptist Church Gym – 510 W. Collin Street (Go to the FLC at the back of the church)
  • Corsicana Public Library – 100 N Twelfth Street (Hours are listed here)
  • YMCA – 400 Oaklawn Avenue
  • God’s Holy Temple – 301 E. Third Avenue
  • First Baptist Corsicana – 510 W. Collin Street

If there are any additional shelters available to provide assistance in Corsicana or around the larger county, please e-mail news@navarrocountygazette.com so we can update this listing.

Additionally, ERCOT’s Twitter page is warning its users of a scam circulating: “There is a scam circulating on social media asking customers to text their private account numbers. Don’t do it! We don’t need any of your info to get your power back on – we are working as fast as we possibly can.”
